Make up - WGSN

S/S 11 couture: beauty analysis

By Theresa Yee, WGSN, 02 February 2011
Parisian couture designers went all out this season, with theatrical and romantic beauty looks ruling the runway. Femme fatale hair and make-up was contrasted against soft, natural looks, while purple lips, sculpted hairstyling and extreme eyeshadow provided some daringly bold directions. WGSN pinpoints the four key beauty trends that emerged.

  • Glamorous screen siren

  • Make-up: Blood-red lips, groomed brows and black flicks extending out from the corners of the eyes. False lashes add extra impact. Polished and perfect skin has a matt, chalky finish
Hair: Super shine, big glossy curls and sculpted elegant up-dos are key

I thought this waas fairly suttle make up, but we still get the edg with the bright red lips. I think these are an essential and the dark eye make up, with flicked out eye liner and fake eye lashes. It makes the eyes appear more bold.

  • Red alert

  • Make-up: Based on a red colour palette, with key tones in tomato and fire-engine shades. Graphic geometric shapes and lines decorate the face and body

I know this "red alert" theme is quite extreme, but I think it's unique. It represents a strong colour which relates to the film. I also think it fits in with the whole "punk" style we are going for. Its a bit of a different way of showing the graffiti style. Instead of always using it on location, it appears to be effective on the face as part of the make up.
