DIY punk surfaces: denim trend flash

By the WGSN Denim team, 29 November 2011
In the latest of our DIY surface reports, WGSN examines the luxe punk looks seen recently on the catwalks. Heavily embroidered and customised surfaces create a new, richly textured appearance, while maintaining an original DIY punk aesthetic.
Key to this look are the studded, pinned and stitched embroideries seen at Balmain, Isabel Marant and Ashish, while hand-drawn designs and doodles are an instant and quirky DIY update for surfaces

  • Densely cover surfaces with studs to create a new armoured appearance
  • Create new, eclectic textures by covering entire garments with coloured stitched pattern
    • Use scribbled felt-tip pen markings to create a simple DIY aesthetic
    • Quirky doodled messages, drawings and symbols look strong
    • Combine with studs, patches and bleached patterns for a fully reworked and individualised look
We were looking at trends on WGSN and came across this 'Denim Trash Trend' which we thought  linked to our shoot. Maybe we could include our own graffiti and doodles to an outfit to make it appear more edgy and punk like. Denim could also be another option.
